So what if I did not make it to Canada or Minnesota this summer? On the calendar there is still about a month left of the season and in Texas weather wise there are about two and a half. But if you work in Education your summer ended abruptly this week. The dorms reopened, all scheduling talk begins with “fall & winter”, and all of the cool summer clothes in the stores have been replace by the goth crap the college kids wear.
However, just because summer is over (for me) does not mean TWAATFOG will spiral into oblivion…again. I do have winter plans. I will forgo some hunting to work in a little more camping & riding. Sure the Labrador will get the short end of the stick but I think he would be just as happy chasing buffalo in Oklahoma as he would retrieving ducks from icy cold water in January. And we may still do that…in January not October or early November. Basically, if it is warm enough to sleep in a tent or ride the mule then that’s what we will do. 30 degrees? Fine, we will sit in a boat wearing down & neoprene drinking coffee waiting on the ducks.
Now for Canada, about 6 months ago I had e-mailed their tourism dept. for info. I got it today. Only slightly faster than if I needed an emergency MRI or other life saving medical procedure. Woo-hoo Socialism! Anyway, I think I was trying to do too much in a week. To have to drive 1100 miles to ride another 1500, then to drive the 1100 mile home. For those (me) weak in math that is 3700 miles in 7 days! In perpetual motion I would need to average 22.8 MPH to get back in a week. Not just while riding or driving mind you but while eating, drinking, sleeping, etc I would need to maintain a pace of 22.8 MPH. Too much. So, I may just try Minnesota this April or May. The temp is still cool enough during the days and the evenings are warm enough to tent it. That will knock about 1000 miles off of the trip. Still, 2700 miles is a lot of road time alone. Maybe I can do it in 10 days?
On more realistic goals I hope to get in a riding or kayak fishing trip to Galveston and a few other local runs this fall. We will be in Galveston in September for a gathering so maybe something then.
